One answer to that question is that it is impossible for Palestinians to give up. Not because they are superhuman people, but because of their condition after the Nakba in 1948, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were killed and expelled in a campaign of terror by Zionist terrorist units like the Irgun, Lehi, Haganah and Palmach. Normally when refugees flee a war zone, they can make use of the human right, enshrined in international law, to return to their homes when they so choose. In the case of the Nakba, that right has been violated by Israel for the past 78 years. The result of this is that there are now 6 - 9 million stateless Palestinians. The problem with being stateless is that you have limited rights and options open to you. This is especially a problem for the stateless Palestinians in the occupied territories, without a right to vote or meaningful self governance, subject to cruel military courts with a 96% conviction rate. Meanwhile Israel continues to expel Palestinians from their land while protecting deeply racist and violent settlers. Understandably, neighbouring countries will not agree to naturalize and take in millions of Palestinians: they do not want to be a party to the ongoing crimes committed by Israel. Palestinians are trapped: denied return, denied self determination, denied stability, denied dignity. And so they do not give up, and they keep fighting for justice. To gain a better understanding of the Palestinian condition, join us on May 17th in the Wibar, where we will screen the documentary "Palestine 48", about the Nakba. After the screening, there will be an discussion (in Dutch) with Jaap Hamburger from Een Ander Joods Geluid, an anti-Zionist organization, and Muawya Hindi, a Palestinian whose family lost everything in the Nakba.

We are children of families who were displaced from Palestine in 1948. Later, we experienced forced displacement once again from refugee camps that we believed we would only leave to return to our homeland. Our grandparents kept the keys to their homes and property documents, holding firmly to the right of return, which has now been delayed for more than 78 years. The suffering in refugee camps continued, with harsh conditions, destruction, and poor living situations in Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan. One of the most severe tragedies occurred in Yarmouk Camp, once known as the “capital of the Palestinian diaspora,” before it was heavily destroyed and besieged. During the siege, 186 people died of starvation, most of them children. In addition, around 11,000 Palestinians remain missing since the Syrian war, most of them from this camp. After their homes were destroyed, families were forced to live in parks, mosques, and shelters. Many attempted to flee by land and sea, where hundreds lost their lives. The bombing of the camp also left many victims—some lost their lives, others suffered permanent disabilities, and many continue to endure deep psychological trauma. Today, after the war has subsided, some families are trying to return to the camp and repair what remains of their homes to escape homelessness and rising rent costs. Through this event, we will share the story of the camp through the voices of its people—the true storytellers—via artistic performances, films, and guest speakers. We also reaffirm our right to return to our homes in Palestine, occupied since 1948. The event also aims to raise donations to support these families in rebuilding their homes so they can live with at least a minimum level of dignity.
