He was physically carried out of Antony Blinken’s final press conference after demanding to know why those enabling mass atrocities are not answering at The Hague. He argues that South Africa’s move at the International Court of Justice was an assertion of Global South leadership and that the next front is invoking “Uniting for Peace” at the United Nations General Assembly to break the US veto stranglehold at the Security Council. This conversation situates Palestine within a broader architecture of imperial power, from sanctions regimes and regime change operations to nuclear coercion and the disciplining of the Global South. It will focus on the significance of the 1936–39 Palestinian Revolution, a key moment in Palestinian resistance, brought to new audiences through Annemarie Jacir’s film, Palestine 36. Over four sessions, we will engage with why this history has been remembered, retold, and reclaimed over generations—and what it demands of those of us committed to liberation today. Against the backdrop of the ongoing colonial genocide in Gaza, which has further exposed the realities of Zionism and the role of U.S. imperialism, this history offers urgent lessons for understanding the present. We will draw on Ghassan Kanafani’s analysis of the 1936–39 Palestinian Revolution and the forces which gave rise to the uprising. The course will also feature the storytellers behind Palestine 36, alongside cultural workers, academics, and organizers, who will reflect on the film’s significance and the relevance of this history today. Gaza has been bombarded by almost daily Israeli assaults since October 2023, making it hell on earth for the Palestinians who live there. Israeli assaults on the West Bank are equally as devastating, but executed differently. Most recently, the Israeli government has agreed to a plan proposed by several ministers (Smotrich, Levin, and Katz) to lay claim to West Bank land in Area C if the Palestinians who live there cannot prove that they “own” it. Proving ownership would be near impossible due to the Israeli occupation’s violence destroying decades old Palestinian documents, and the requirements to prove ownership being purposefully difficult to fulfil. This proposal in practice means the annexation of the little land that the Palestinians have left. We know the international community will once again allow Israel to get away with these crimes against the Palestinian people, thus we must make it too costly for the UK to continue to back its genocidal ally. March with us this Saturday, and think about what actions you can take to disrupt the UK’s support for Israel.
