Le 6 octobre, un mois après la remise des pétitions, nous avons pu relayer les préoccupations des citoyen.ne.s en commission Affaires générales, relations internationales…. L’échange, qui a duré presque deux heures, est consultable sur le site du Parlement wallon. Depuis, la majorité (MR + Engagés) a fait, le 20 octobre, une proposition de conclusion mais celle-ci ne nous satisfait pas du tout. Nous avons le sentiment que la majorité souhaite balayer le sujet le plus rapidement possible en donnant l’impression de déjà en faire suffisamment pour empêcher ce commerce entre la Wallonie et Israël. L’opposition parlementaire ne l’a pas non plus avalisée et dès lors les parlementaires de la Commission relations internationales vont (à nouveau !) discuter lundi 10 novembre à 14h des réponses politiques qu’ils souhaitent donner aux signataires de l’initiative citoyenne. Entre temps, nous avons appris que des colis suspectés de contenir du matériel militaire destiné à Israël étaient encore arrivés à Liège, mais aux dernières nouvelles ils étaient bloqués et ils n’avaient pas encore pu être inspectés. La carte blanche de François Graas, coordinateur de campagnes et du plaidoyer à Amnesty International Belgique, publiée le 22 octobre dernier dans Le Soir montre que la Wallonie a encore bien du chemin à faire avant de nous rassurer sur l’application des grands principes qu’elle prétend défendre. Last week, we heard that the City Council was planning to use our city’s funds to purchase two military-grade sound weapons (long-range acoustic devices, aka “sonic cannons,”) to use as “pre-escalation” crowd-control devices! The only opportunity to provide public comment was initially during the “consent agenda” portion of the city council meeting, rather than having a defined item on the council’s agenda. Thankfully, due to alert citizens, the issue was brought to our city’s attention and postponed until the November 10 city council meeting. Long-range acoustic devices (LRADs) are among the weapons that were deployed at Standing Rock. Although originally deployed to aid in emergency alerts and evacuations, when used for crowd control, LRADS are designed to emit loud, painful and even dangerous levels of noise, which can lead to serious health issues (potentially including permanent hearing loss) in individuals exposed to them. Additionally, these weapons are manufactured by Genasys, who also supplies Israel's unlawful and genocidal campaign against Palestinians. Our city council should not be using our money to support weapons manufacturers that are complicit in genocide. JOIN US IN STANDING UP AGAINST THIS OUTSIDE OF CITY HALL ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 10 AT 5PM.
