JOIN US ON FRIDAY NOVEMBER 29TH AS WE DEMONSTRATE For many decades, Israel has ignored UN resolutions demanding an end to the occupation and the right to self-determination for the Palestinian people. As early as 1948, the UN stated in Resolution 194 that all Palestinian refugees have the right to return to their homes, or to receive compensation if they choose not to return. Millions of Palestinians still live in refugee camps in neighboring countries such as Lebanon, Syria and Jordan, because they are denied their right to return by Israel. The UN has since declared Israel’s settlements and construction of a wall on occupied Palestinian land illegal. The UN has also concluded that Israel’s occupation of Palestine is apartheid. Under international law, apartheid is considered a crime against humanity. Nevertheless, Israel continues the occupation, settlement policy and systematic violations of human rights. Now we have also seen over a year of Israel’s brutal genocide in Gaza. Despite all these facts, UiT has remained passive for over a year in addressing the ongoing Educide in Gaza. Israel has deliberately and systematically targeted educational infrastructure and personnel, reducing every university in Gaza to rubble. Over 450 academic and university staff have been killed, including three university presidents, seven deans, and 64 professors. For more than a year, 80,000 university students and 625,000 school students in Gaza have been deprived of their fundamental right to education. Yet, UiT appears reluctant to take concrete actions, such as boycotting Israeli institutions and companies that are evidently complicit in these crimes against humanity, both academically, politically and financially. We will persist in pressing UiT leadership to act decisively and demonstrate a meaningful response actions to what constitutes no less than a crime of genocide.
