For decades, Palestinian children in Gaza have flown kites as a symbol of joy, freedom, and resistance, finding moments of happiness under the open sky despite the hardships they are forced to endure. In one of the most densely populated and besieged places in the world, kites have become a symbol of hope. Israel’s genocide has now made Gaza the most dangerous place in the world to be a child. As we fly our kites, we will mourn the more than 17,400 children who have been murdered since October 2023. As we fly our kites, we will hold at the centre of our hearts the more than 1 million Palestinian children in Gaza right now: 38,000+ of whom have been made orphans; 4,000+ of whom have been made amputees, more than anywhere else on the planet; all of whom have been systematically deprived of food, clean water, sanitation, education, medical care, their homes, and any semblance of safety and justice for more than 16 months, and 76 years before that.
