Stones against one of the most militarised colonial entities. These images shattered any lie of “both sides”, yet are a testament to the enduring resilience of the Palestinian people. While the catalyst of the Stones’ Intifada (First Intifada) is pinpointed to the spontaneous outrage and mass mobilisation after an israeli IOF truck mowed down and martyred 4 Palestinian workers in the Jabalia refugee camp on 9 December 1987, Palestinian youth had been demonstrating for months. The Stone’s Intifada showed the world that decades of oppression, settler-colonialism and apartheid will always be met with resistance, and that a steadfast people will never be humiliated. The Intifada redefined resistance, returning the centre of struggle to the people on the streets, targeting the machinery of occupation, not behind closed doors in foreign negotiating rooms where those involved believed the only way forward for Palestine was through concessions. The response of the indigenous Palestinian people made clear to us that under no circumstances can there be a compromise on the Thawabit (Palestinian Constants). It is thus our duty, in the spirit of the Generation of Stones, to carry forward and globalise the Palestinian fight for liberation. 38 years later, their message is ours: the intifada lives on, wherever we stand. Birmingham, your turnout is the stone in the sling. We cannot afford to get complacent under the current so called ‘ceasefire’.
