It will focus on the significance of the 1936–39 Palestinian Revolution, a key moment in Palestinian resistance, brought to new audiences through Annemarie Jacir’s film, Palestine 36. Over four sessions, we will engage with why this history has been remembered, retold, and reclaimed over generations—and what it demands of those of us committed to liberation today. Against the backdrop of the ongoing colonial genocide in Gaza, which has further exposed the realities of Zionism and the role of U.S. imperialism, this history offers urgent lessons for understanding the present. We will draw on Ghassan Kanafani’s analysis of the 1936–39 Palestinian Revolution and the forces which gave rise to the uprising. The course will also feature the storytellers behind Palestine 36, alongside cultural workers, academics, and organizers, who will reflect on the film’s significance and the relevance of this history today. As Palestine 36 circulates in theaters, sparking renewed interest in this history, the course situates the film within the Palestinian tradition of cultural production and intellectual work that preserves and transmits the lessons of revolutionary struggle.
