Israel has systematically destroyed or annexed over 75% over Gaza’s agricultural land, including Beit Lahiya’s famous “red gold” strawberries, Deir el-Balah’s oranges, olives, and dates, Khan Younis’s citrus orchards, and Maghazi’s farmlands. (ReliefMed, 24 Jun 2024) Israeli bombings have left behind 22.9 million tonnes of toxic debris containing hazardous materials like asbestos, heavy metals, and unexploded ordnance. (Guardian, 29 March 2024). The region’s waste infrastructure has collapsed, leading to garbage accumulation and air pollution from incineration. The fragile biodiversity of Gaza, home to 150-200 bird species, 20 mammal species, and rare reptiles, is at risk due to constant Israeli attacks. White phosphorus bombs, illegal under international law, are poisoning the environment. These bombs ignite upon contact with air, burn uncontrollably, and can remain hidden in water for years, poisoning aquatic life, spreading through water sources, then into the soil and finally the air. (Andoula, Oct 8 2024). Just this week, Yousef Abu Rabee was killed by Israel. Yousef started growing vegetables in the ruins of his family’s farm in Beit Lahia and was co-founder of Tharma, an urban gardening initiative. In the occupied West Bank, Hanan Abu Salami was shot in the back while harvesting olives with her family, despite having obtained permission from Israeli officials.
