Até então, a Palestina era uma sociedade multiétnica e multicultural, mas o aumento da imigração judaica, impulsionada pela perseguição na Europa e pelo movimento sionista, que exigia um estado judeu na Palestina, veio mudar para sempre a sua história. Milícias judaicas lançaram ataques contra aldeias palestinianas, forçando milhares de pessoas a fugir e a situação culminou num ataque em grande escala em 1948, com a declaração de independência do estado sionista de Israel e uma ofensiva lançada pelas suas recém-criadas “forças de segurança”. Todos os anos, a 15 de maio, milhões de palestinianos em todo o mundo assinalam a Nakba: a expulsão de cerca de 750 000 refugiados da Palestina e o desenraizamento de 2/3 da sua população, no âmbito da criação do estado de Israel.
