They will present their latest report, «Sexual Violence as a Weapon of Genocide,» and we will meet a Palestinian woman who will share her experiences as a prisoner in an Israeli jail in 2024. For over a year now, Israel has deployed sexual violence as a tactic of genocide against Palestinian men and women alike. While sexual violence has long been a tactic of torture at Israeli military checkpoints, during raids on their own homes and inside prisons, it has rapidly increased since the start of the genocide in Gaza. The Palestinian NGO MIFTAH, has been collecting testimonies from released female Palestinian prisoners who were held in Israeli jails. They will share the findings of their latest report titled, «Sexual Violence as a Weapon of Genocide”. Accompanying MIFTAH is a recently released female prisoner who was held in Israeli prison for three months. The vigil will be a space to honour our fallen colleagues and students in Palestine and acknowledge the devastation and destruction caused by Israel’s genocide of Palestinian people, particularly Israel’s destruction of Palestinian schools, universities, libraries, museums, archives, and hospitals - all places of research, teaching, and learning - and Israel’s brazen and targeted attacks on students, teachers, and academics. In response to the scholasticide in Gaza, the Victorian Division of the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) has officially endorsed this event and will be inviting all union members at Victorian universities to attend. The vigil is being organised by a group of people who represent the diverse Victorian education sector, including members from the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) and the Australian Education Union (AEU) who are also members of respective groups advocating for an end to Israel’s ongoing genocide and scholasticide in Palestine. The work carried out by the @stwuk Trade Union Network over the past two years to confront political problems in our trade unions on the question of opposing arms profiteering, war and imperialism has found a strong echo in the wider trade union movement. At the start of September, the @tradesunioncongress voted to back our Workplace Days of Action for Palestine. @gmstopthewar will be holding a rally on the next Workplace Day of on the day at 6pm, St Peter’s Square, with activists and elected union members who made this happen...and you! The next Workplace Day of Action has been backed by the Trades Union Congress, and we hope it will turn out to be one of the biggest yet. The TUC’s support shows that the trade union movement nationally is swinging behind workplace action in order to force the government to stop colluding in genocide. Take part and join the call on Keir Starmer and David Lammy to end their support for Israel as it pursues its genocide in Gaza and escalates war throughout the region. As the genocide in Gaza continues and Israel escalates its attacks on other countries we are asking people to organise some kind of action in their workplace or place of study on 28 November. This can range from lunchtime rallies to badge wearing or raising money for charity. Here are some ideas: Make it a ‘Wear a badge or scarf for Palestine day’ Organise a two minute silence at work for Palestine Call a walkout and a rally at lunchtime with speakers Organise a stall outside work as people come in Invite everyone to a Palestinian lunch or a bake sale Do a collection and a petition for the movement around work Get everyone to change their zoom background to the Palestinian flag Call an organising meeting now to discuss with workmates what you think is possible in your workplace. Put a motion to your union branch if you have one, calling for support for the day and outlining your action.
