Jenin, Jenin is a documentary that tells the story of the Battle of Jenin in 2002, when the occupation invaded and massacred peaceful Palestinian protestors in the West Bank. This documentary shows us that the ethnic cleansing of Palestine did not begin in 2023 and reminds us that, just because the bombs have stopped falling in Gaza, massacres are still happening across occupied Palestinian lands. The initiative gained even more urgency in response to the genocide in Gaza. Two years on, it continues to bring hundreds of screenings to cities across the world each 2 November, the day the Balfour Declaration was issued in 1917 by the British government, marking the start of the modern colonization of Palestinian land. The program opens at 17:00 with Upshot (2024), a short film by Maha Haj. The story follows Suleiman and Mona, a couple living quietly on a remote farm, whose routine is disrupted by the arrival of Khalil, a journalist. His visit forces them to confront a long-buried tragedy: the loss of their five children to rocket fire. Next, at 18:00 comes Jenin, Jenin (2002). Directed by Mohammad Bakri, the documentary portrays the aftermath of the Israeli incursion into the Jenin refugee camp and captures both the grief and the unwavering determination of its inhabitants. Lastly, at 20:00 comes When I Saw You (2012). It’s a portrait of a moment in a child’s life that brings home the daily humiliations of a refugee camp and the ache of displacement. The film was selected as the Palestinian entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards. It won Best Asian Film at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival. The screening is part of Palestine Cinema Days: Around the World, a global effort organised by Aflamuna and Filmlab Palestine to counter the censoring of Palestinian voices and support global solidarity with the Palestinian struggle. We are part of more than 500 film screenings around the world! Our programme on Sunday starts at 19:00 and includes a short introduction, the filmscreening and a subsequent talk with two guest speakers. The programme ends around 21:00, but will be followed by a second screening in the same location, of the movie “The Dupes”. Ob 20. uri bo sledila projekcija filma Mozje na soncu(1972) egipčanskega režiserja Tewfiqa Saleha, posnetega po noveli palestinskega pisatelja Ghassana Kanafanija. Gre za prvi igrani film arabskega sveta, ki skozi zgodbe treh palestinskih moških različnih generacij v iskanju poti do Kuvajta – kot simbola za boljše življenje – razpira kolektivno tragedijo palestinskega ljudstva. Pripoved se prepleta med preteklostjo in sedanjostjo, razkriva življenja in izgube treh Palestincev ter se zaključi z odločitvijo vsakega posameznika za beg. Kot piše Nina Cvar, pa nobena zgodba ni zgolj osebna: vse tri utelešajo palestinsko izkušnjo izgnanstva skozi prostorske figure puščave, cisterne in mej. Te topografije niso le nevtralno ozadje, temveč delujejo kot tehnologije izbrisa in smrti – puščava kot prostor brezizhodnosti, cisterna kot stisnjen in smrtonosen prostor brez zraka, meje pa kot birokratsko-teritorialne črte, ki odločajo o življenju in smrti. Predavanje bo izvedeno v sodelovanju z društvom slovenskih filmskih publicistov in publicistk Fipresci ter s finančno podporo @slovenskifilmskicenter. Projekcijo smo pripravili v sodelovanju s @filmlabpalestine in @pravicepalestincev_slo. Tako za predavanje kot za projekcijo bodo na voljo brezplačne vstopnice.
