Dans de nombreuses institutions académiques, parler de la Palestine ne relève pas seulement de la recherche scientifique ou de la transmission du savoir. C’est souvent perçu comme un acte politique, parfois même comme une provocation. Des professeurs témoignent de pressions directes ou indirectes : autocensure dans les cours, refus de financer des conférences, annulation de panels ou encore menaces sur le renouvellement de contrats. Officiellement, la liberté académique est garantie. En pratique, les frontières de ce qui est « acceptable » fluctuent au gré des tensions internationales et des lobbys présents dans les campus.
