Friday 20th September - 5PM The head of the occupation’s Shin Bet security service, Ronen Bar, recently stated in a letter to “Israeli” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir that 21,000 Palestinians are currently being held in military prisons. The colonisation of Palestine is inherently an “incarceration crisis” with very clear similarities to the incarceration of Indigenous people in so-called “Australia.” Since the Royal Commission in the 90s, there have been over 500 Blak deaths in custody. Indigenous people are the most incarcerated people on earth. We have seen with our own eyes chilling images of children & toddlers as young as 2 detained by IOF forces with still no update on their whereabouts. Similarly, The Stolen Generation in this colony never ended and Aboriginal children are being forcibly removed from their families every day. We have now seen this colony’s government backflip on lowering the age of criminal responsibility that disproportionately affects First Nations people here, who are overwhelmingly over represented in the prisons systems. By highlighting the similarities between the two colonial powers of “Australia” and “Israel” and their reliance on prisons to maintain their oppression of Indigenous peoples, this protest makes demands of the “Australian” Labor Government that are inextricably tied: no more Blak deaths in custody, free Palestinian prisoners, stop incarcerating Blak people. We are demanding the Albanese government sanction “Israel” for their unjust imprisonment of 21,000 Palestinian people, and cease the same violence they are perpetrating on this unceded, Aboriginal land. He is an Associate Researcher and the Regional Manager of Varieties of Democracy Institute (Gothenburg University) for Gulf countries. He was a Post-doctoral fellow at the Orient Institute in Beirut (OIB) in 2020. Since 2021, he is an associate fellow within SEPAD, sectarianism, proxies and de-sectorisation at Lancaster University. In 2018, He was an associate fellow at the Post-Conflict Research Center in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
